- September 25, 2026CancelledThe wellhead bitcoin mine at Longhorn Pad A has been shut down and the site vacated. A PA DEP inspection on 2025-03-04 found the crypto-mining generators and tanks removed and only empty metallic sheds on the gravel pad; DEP issued a notice of violation on 2025-03-10 and gave Diversified until September 2025 to plug the wells, stating the wells are not equipped for production. The operation had run roughly two years from December 2022, without the required air quality permit. Source: Capital & Main
- October 2022OperatingMines were powered up in October 2022 before permits were in hand; DEP issued a notice of violation for breaching state air pollution and noise law, and approved the permit in December 2022. Source: Capital & Main
Opposition and litigation at this site
Nothing on record as of September 25, 2026. No lawsuit, organized opposition, or contested hearing over Longhorn Pad A Wellhead Bitcoin Mine in Horton Township, Elk County, Pennsylvania appears in the sources this registry tracks. That is an absence in our sources rather than a finding that none exists, and local opposition often predates any coverage a national dataset would pick up.
If you live near this site and something is happening that this page does not show, that is worth telling us. Send us the document and it goes in the record with the source attached. For sites where opposition is already established, see every contested site we track.
Power and water
Natural gas from two on-pad fracking wells is funnelled directly into engines that power the mining computers.
Notes on the record
Diversified Production LLC (a Diversified Energy PLC subsidiary) acquired the wells in November 2020, applied to mine bitcoin in June 2022 and powered up that October before the permit was issued. A sibling site, Longhorn Pad C, drew its own violation in March 2023 with permits approved in May 2023. Horton Township adopted a bitcoin mining ordinance requiring a fully enclosed building, under 50 decibels at the property line, and local permitting. As of the June 2024 source, DEP said full-time operation had not begun because permit-required sound mitigation had not been installed - so 'operational' here reflects an operating but intermittently run site, not full-rate production. No engine count, miner count or MW rating is published. Coordinate is a township-centroid geocode.
