How it was built
The base is the Compute Atlas survey, which compiles each site from permits, utility filings, company disclosures and named news reports and publishes the result under CC BY 4.0. We pin one version, keep the snapshot in our repository, and refresh it only after reading the diff, so a number on this site can always be traced to a dated record.
On that base we layer three things, each marked in the data. Joins: where one of our case files is about a site, the profile carries the case, the reception is set no lower than the case record establishes, and the case file's sources are appended. Corrections: where we have read the filings ourselves, the fields we can document win, and the profile says in plain words what changed and why. Additions: sites the survey did not have, compiled only from the public documents already cited in our case files and marked with a record origin of suedatacenters.
The rule that governs every field is the survey's own: a blank is never a zero. Where a figure was looked for and not found, the profile names the public record that would establish it.

Questions
Where does the data come from?
The base is Compute Atlas, an open survey of US data centers published under CC BY 4.0 (version 1.32.0, September 7, 2026). We pin a specific version so every figure on the site can be traced to it. On top of that base we layer our own reporting: 30 sites are joined to our case files, 3 carry hand checked corrections from documents we read ourselves, and 4 sites the survey did not have were compiled from the public records cited in our case files.
What does a blank mean?
A blank means no public source we or the survey reviewed established the figure. It never means zero. The profile for each site lists the specific document that would close each gap, because in every fight on our tracker the decisive fact came out of a public records request.
How is community reception decided?
Reception is a sourced signal, not an opinion. Litigation means a lawsuit related to the site's siting, permitting or operation is or has been filed. Opposed means organized local opposition is the dominant signal on record. Contested means active public debate with hearings, petitions or organized opposition and no lawsuit. Mixed means documented support and documented opposition both exist. Supported means public support with no documented opposition. Where our case files establish litigation, the reception is set to litigation; our reporting never lowers a reception the base record already carries.
How often is it updated?
The pinned survey version is refreshed after we review the diff, so a change in the record is a deliberate editorial act with a date. New records in the live survey are reviewed nightly as leads. Our own corrections and joins update whenever the case file they come from does.
Can I use this commercially, or in a news story?
Yes. The data is CC BY 4.0. Credit Compute Atlas for the base and SueDataCenters.org for the joins, corrections and additional records. The citation formats are on this page. If you publish something built on it, tell us and we will link to it.
How do I report an error?
Send the public document that establishes the correct figure through our contact page. Corrections to base survey fields can also be filed with Compute Atlas directly; each profile links to its survey record. We publish the correction with the date and the source.
