Opposition and litigation at this site

Nothing on record as of October 10, 2026. No lawsuit, organized opposition, or contested hearing over Simple Mining Madison Bitcoin Hosting Site in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota appears in the sources this registry tracks. That is an absence in our sources rather than a finding that none exists, and local opposition often predates any coverage a national dataset would pick up.

If you live near this site and something is happening that this page does not show, that is worth telling us. Send us the document and it goes in the record with the source attached. For sites where opposition is already established, see every contested site we track.

A new status, a permit, a reception finding, or a lawsuit. Nothing else, ever.

Power and water

Power is bought from Heartland Energy through the City of Madison at the open-market rate. Service is interruptible, as the city requires.

Sept 2026 plan: closed-loop liquid cooling with no water consumption. The July 2026 pitch said air cooling first, then a closed-loop glycol system after 12-18 months, with no connection to the local water system.

Notes on the record

Small-scale (max 10 MW, typically 5-10 MW) bitcoin hosting site on 3.73 acres of city-owned land along SD-34 in Madison, north of Highway 34 and west of the city's southeast substation. Four modular container-sized units. Simple Mining (Cedar Falls, IA) would run the machines; other parties would own them. Board of Adjustment granted the CUP and variance on 2026-09-15. The City Commission took no action on 2026-09-21; the lease and electric service agreement were still pending as of late Sept 2026. Construction is estimated at ~3 months once approved. This follows Giga Energy's earlier 10 MW proposal on parcels next to the Madison Generating Plant, which the city ended in June 2026 over interruptibility terms. Coordinates are the OSM centroid of Madison, not the parcel.
