Notes on the record

An 8,000 sq ft data center with Tier II redundancy, backup batteries and generator, inside the six-story, 74,000 sq ft, LEED Gold IT Center on the UH Mānoa campus. The building is hardened against Category III hurricane winds. UH offers colocation there at $3,700 per cabinet per year. Under a 2016 agreement, it also houses part of the State of Hawaiʻi's executive-branch IT systems moved from the aging Kalanimoku Building data center, with ETS reimbursing UH's costs. It hosts UH's Mana HPC cluster, which as of 2022 had 8,964 cores and 120 GPUs that the source calls critical for machine-learning and AI research; about $4.5M had been invested in the cluster since 2014. That cluster figure is not a facility investment, so the investment figure is omitted. the AI use classification is mixed_use: AI/ML work on the GPU cluster is one named use alongside enterprise university and state systems. No MW figure was published. Coordinates are the Census geocode of 2520 Correa Rd.

What the record does not establish, and the document that would

In every fight on our tracker the decisive fact came out of a public records request. These are the requests for this site.

  • Power capacity in megawatts
  • Cooling method and water use
  • Tax abatements or other public subsidy

The utility's large load service agreement, the interconnection request in the grid operator's queue, or the electrical site plan in the permit file.
Cooling method and water use
The water service agreement, any groundwater appropriation permit, and the mechanical narrative in the site plan.
Tax abatements or other public subsidy
The abatement, PILOT, or development agreement approved by the county, city, or development authority, and the state's data center sales tax exemption certificate if one was issued.

Distances are between recorded coordinates, many of which are a city or county centroid, so treat them as approximate. Cumulative load on one utility and one aquifer is the question a planning commission rarely asks.
