Opened April 2017 as Project Spokane, Montana's first crypto-mining operation, at the former Bonner (Milltown) sawmill industrial site; acquired by HyperBlock in July 2018 (13,000+ servers at peak, using as much power as roughly a third of the county's homes). Persistent resident complaints about cooling-fan noise led Missoula County to adopt interim, then in 2021 permanent, crypto-mining zoning rules -- among the first of their kind in the US. HyperBlock ceased operations and the facility filed for bankruptcy/shut down in spring 2020; no current bitcoin-mining operator. The same Bonner Mill site is now associated with a separate, more recent proposed AI data-center project (a different facility type, not evaluated here).
