Opposition and litigation at this site

Nothing on record as of October 9, 2026. No lawsuit, organized opposition, or contested hearing over Google Kansas City Data Center (Hunt Midwest Business Center) in Kansas City, Clay County, Missouri appears in the sources this registry tracks. That is an absence in our sources rather than a finding that none exists, and local opposition often predates any coverage a national dataset would pick up.

If you live near this site and something is happening that this page does not show, that is worth telling us. Send us the document and it goes in the record with the source attached. For sites where opposition is already established, see every contested site we track.

A new status, a permit, a reception finding, or a lawsuit. Nothing else, ever.

Power and water

KSHB (2024) says the site will be powered with 400 MW of carbon-free solar from the Beavertail Solar farm under a power purchase agreement with Ranger Power and D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments; Google's Kansas City page also cites 400 MW of new-to-the-grid carbon-free capacity. The 400 MW is contracted supply, not the campus load.

Notes on the record

Google's first Kansas City-area campus, in Hunt Midwest Business Center, Northland, Clay County, announced by Hunt Midwest on 20 March 2024 as a new $1 billion Google data center. Distinct from google-project-mica-kc-northland-mo (Project Mica, the second campus); the Kansas City Star reports Google's Evergy agreement covers energy costs for 'both' campuses, and Google's own Kansas City page lists two new data centers, status 'In development'. Location: the 2023 Baxtel report on Google's planning applications (filed under the alias Shalerock LLC) places the work between NE Parvin Road and N Arlington Avenue, and the land comprises 78.9 acres bought in 2019 plus 236.4 acres bought in December 2021 (315.3 acres in total). The pin is the OpenStreetMap node where NE Parvin Road meets N Arlington Avenue (39.17256, -94.46443); the campus lies in the surrounding Hunt Midwest land, so it is approximate. A third-party Baxtel listing gives 9900 NE Parvin Rd, which Nominatim and the Census geocoder could not resolve to a building, so it is not used; a 2019 Baxtel report separately describes the 78-acre parcel as the former AK Steel site near MO-210 and N Arlington Avenue. Code name 'Project Shale': appears in two 2019 reports (Institutional Real Estate, Inc. and Baxtel, both relaying local coverage of the 22 July 2019 Port KC board meeting) for the 78-acre Hunt Midwest parcel. The 2023 Baxtel report ties the same 78.9-acre 2019 purchase to Shalerock LLC, and Shalerock/Shale is consistent, but no 2024-2026 source fetched uses 'Project Shale' for the $1 billion campus, so the identification is an inference from the shared site, not a stated one (hence confidence 'reported'). Status: only Google's 2026 statement (via the Kansas City Star) is dated and says 'under construction'; Google's own page says 'In development'. Baxtel's listing says 'Operational' with year built 2025, which conflicts and is not relied on; no source fetched reports the campus opening. A 2024 announcement reportedly expected the first data center online in 2025 (not independently confirmed here). Investment: $1 billion announced March 2024 (the 2019 report cited $600 million). Baxtel lists up to 1.435 million sq ft in four phases plus ancillary buildings on 315 acres, which matches the 2023 planning filing as reported, and Evergy as utility; no per-building size or count is stated. No facility MW load is stated in any source fetched; the 400 MW is new carbon-free generation (Beavertail Solar) contracted to offset demand, not the campus load.

What the record does not establish, and the document that would

In every fight on our tracker the decisive fact came out of a public records request. These are the requests for this site.

  • Power capacity in megawatts
  • Cooling method and water use
  • Tax abatements or other public subsidy
  • Permanent jobs promised
  • Land area
  • How the community has received it
Which document closes each gap
Power capacity in megawatts
The utility's large load service agreement, the interconnection request in the grid operator's queue, or the electrical site plan in the permit file.
Cooling method and water use
The water service agreement, any groundwater appropriation permit, and the mechanical narrative in the site plan.
Tax abatements or other public subsidy
The abatement, PILOT, or development agreement approved by the county, city, or development authority, and the state's data center sales tax exemption certificate if one was issued.
Permanent jobs promised
The economic development application or incentive agreement, which usually states a job commitment and a clawback.
Land area
The rezoning application, the plat, or the deed recorded with the county.
How the community has received it
Planning commission and governing body minutes, public comment records, and any petition or lawsuit filed in the county.

Distances are between recorded coordinates, many of which are a city or county centroid, so treat them as approximate. Cumulative load on one utility and one aquifer is the question a planning commission rarely asks.
